One of my goals for 2021 was to create more content & content that's not only limited to those who like music, but still in some way, it could still relate back to music. I feel like writing about music has it's boundaries & those that I'm comfortable staying within. After all, I created this "blog" to push myself in an experimental way. I'm going to attempt to publish something every two weeks in that sort of direction & see how it goes.
A song that you like with a number in it?
I think it's only fitting to do this song, hence the new year. I've been obsessed with the Father of The Bride album by Vampire Weekend . I always get like this with albums when I revisit them. I end up becoming hyper-fixated on them on the fifth/sixth time around like, "wow, this album is so good, what was I hearing the first time around", type of thing.
I admire so much the way that Ezra Koeing & producer Ariel Retchsaid incorporate little pieces & samples within their songs. This is seen in Hold You Now , the opener of the album, where"God Yu Takem Laef Blong Mi", a sample performed by a Melanesian choir for a war film, is used as the chorus. In 2021, Ezra takes Watering a Flower by Japanese musician, Haruomi Hosono, and doesn't take away anything from it, only adding to it. It's such a statement of a song being under 2 minutes, yet it's so simplistic in a way that you can pick out the pieces. It's like looking at a project in Audacity with the recordings of all the pieces laid out, but hearing it. I think all these references, not only found in the instrumentals, but in the lyrics too, is what makes Father of The Bride such a rich album.
